The trick: your car now leaks data upstream
Until today the feature was limited to a boutique list of 60-odd models. The expansion, rolled out server-side overnight, means an Audi Q8 e-tron, a base-model Chevy Bolt, even a Lucid Air Dream can now whisper its exact curb weight, battery degradation curve and charging curve to Google’s cloud. The app ingests that stream, mashes it against real-time elevation profiles, traffic congestion and even the barometric pressure that affects aerodynamic drag, then spits back a minute-by-minute forecast of state-of-charge. No third-party dongle, no OBD-II hacker kit—just tap Settings> Your vehicles> Add and pick the trim year.
The payoff is brutally simple: the blue route line now sprouts lightning-bolt glyphs that double as arrival-time bodyguards. Instead of the anxious 12 % guess that used to greet drivers outside Flagstaff, the app promises 27 % and keeps the HVAC running to keep the kids quiet. Miss the predicted charger by more than two minutes and the algorithm auto-recalculates, sometimes nudging the driver to an 150 kW stall three exits earlier because a cold front is pushing headwinds to 18 mph.

Why this lands while federal chargers lag
The United States still only has about 64 000 public DC fast plugs for 3.1 million registered EVs. Google’s move is a software workaround for a hardware deficit: if you cannot guarantee a charger, at least guarantee the knowledge of when you will reach one. The update is live now on Android Auto; CarPlay support trails by “a few weeks,” Apple’s sandboxing rules gumming up the data pipe. iPhone users can still install Google Maps manually, but without the bidirectional handshake the prediction reverts to generic EPA curves—about as useful as a weather forecast from last Tuesday.
