Comcast shifts focus to wireless as xfinity mobile hits record subs

Comcast, the parent company behind Xfinity, is putting more emphasis on its wireless division, following a record quarter for its mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), Xfinity Mobile. As of the end of Q1 2026, the service boasts 9.73 million subscribers, a gain of 435,000 lines during the January to March period.

Xfinity mobile's growth spurt

The MVNO's success can be attributed in part to a promotion offering a free line for a year to new and existing customers. The question now is how many of these free lines will convert to paid subscriptions in the coming months.

Comcast's wireless offensive

Comcast's CEO of Connectivity & Platforms, Steve Croney, asserts that wireless is the company's top priority, aiming to play offense in the market. This shift in strategy comes as the broadband unit continues to lose subscribers, although it did narrow the number of losses in Q1 through revised pricing, a five-year price lock, and the elimination of data caps.

Xfinity mobile's unlimited plans

Earlier this year, Xfinity Mobile discontinued its 'by-the-gig' plan, instead offering two unlimited data plans: Mobile Select and Mobile Plus. Mobile Select, free for the first year at $30/month thereafter, includes unlimited talk, text, and data in the U.S. and over 215 international destinations, as well as unlimited mobile hotspot data with reduced speeds after 15 GB and 720p HD video streaming. The Mobile Plus plan, priced at $15/month for the first year and $45/month thereafter, adds 50 GB of premium mobile hotspot data, 4K UHD video streaming, discounted phone upgrades annually, and Xfinity Mobile Care Plus, which includes phone repair and replacement services.

Competition and future outlook

Xfinity Mobile faces stiff competition from other Verizon-based MVNOs like Visible and Total Wireless, as well as larger carriers like Google Fi, Consumer Cellular, and Mint Mobile. The success of its unlimited plans and continued focus on wireless will be crucial for Xfinity Mobile as it aims to generate new Business and expand its subscriber base.

With the economy in uncertain times, Xfinity Mobile's affordable, unlimited data plans may resonate with price-conscious consumers looking for alternatives to the 'Big 3' carriers. As the wireless market continues to evolve, Comcast's emphasis on Xfinity Mobile could prove a wise strategic move.
