Netflix bets big on kids' games to quiet car rides

Netflix is wading into the mobile gaming arena with a surprising twist: a dedicated app for kids under eight. Called Netflix Playground, the launch feels like a deliberate counterpoint to growing concerns about screen time and early mobile device adoption, offering a curated space for Entertainment within the familiar Netflix ecosystem.

A playground of beloved characters

Forget endless scrolling and potential in-app purchases. Netflix Playground is built around interactive games featuring characters from popular children’s series like Peppa Pig and Sesame Street. The idea, as Netflix sees it, is to provide a distraction during travel—think car rides or grocery store visits—easing the parental struggle of managing restless children. While the move might raise eyebrows amidst ongoing debates about the impact of early screen exposure, many parents juggling busy schedules will likely see it as a welcome reprieve.

“We’re building a world where kids can not only watch their favorite stories but also step into them and interact with their beloved characters,” stated John Derderian, Netflix’s VP of Animated Series and Family Series, in a press release. The platform emphasizes robust parental controls, aiming to provide a safe and high-quality environment where children can explore content at their own pace, all while offering parents a degree of peace of mind.

The app, currently available on both iOS and Android, is accessible to all existing Netflix subscribers. Simply log in with your account, and the games are ready to play. Notably, Netflix Playground is entirely free of advertisements and in-app purchases, a significant differentiator in the often-monetized mobile gaming landscape. The initial lineup includes titles such as Play with Peppa Pig, Sesame Street: Plaza Sésamo, Dr. Seuss: Horton!, Storybots (a sticker and puzzle game), Dr. Seuss: The Sneetches, Dinosaurios despistados, and Dr. Seuss: One Fish, Two Fish, along with a coloring section.

But the expansion doesn't stop with Playground. Netflix is also rolling out new seasons of existing kids' shows, including Season 3 of Gran Camión and additional episodes of Misterios animales. And debuting is Young MacDonald, a musical series following the optimistic grandson of the classic character, as he navigates farm life and problem-solving with his animal companions. The company insists these additions are designed to foster creativity and problem-solving skills through engaging narratives.

Currently live in Australia, Canada, the United States, Philippines, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom, Netflix Playground will expand globally on April 28th. The question now isn't whether kids will use mobile devices, but whether platforms like Netflix can shape that interaction into something genuinely beneficial—or at least, less stressful—for both children and their parents.
