On November 5th, Spain will begin its transition to the DVB-T2 standard, enabling Ultra High Definition (UHD 4K) broadcasts. This transition also marks the launch of the new national channel, La Séptima.
Ensuring Your Television is Ready
While the term ‘digital switchover’ can be concerning, the reality for most viewers will be a smooth transition. Millions will continue to watch HD channels, but access to UHD broadcasts will depend on your television’s compatibility.
Before November, it’s advisable to check your TV’s compatibility with DVB-T2 and the HEVC codec. Several quick methods exist to determine this, avoiding the need for extensive disassembly or app installations.
Government Guidance and Channel Availability
Starting October 5th, major Spanish broadcasters must inform the public about upcoming changes. Expect on-screen notices and campaigns explaining the necessary steps. The key date will arrive a month later.
During the early hours of November 5th, frequency reorganizations will occur across Spain. From 8:00 AM, stations within the RGE2 multiplex must utilize the DVB-T2 standard. Most Smart TVs purchased in the last six to seven years are likely already equipped with DVB-T2 compatibility due to European regulations implemented in 2016.
Testing Compatibility
A simple test is to check for La 1 UHD. If your television can tune into and display this channel without issue, it indicates compatibility with DVB-T2 and HEVC (H.265) decoding. If the channel doesn't appear, a channel scan from the settings menu may suffice.
Consult your television’s specifications – information about the system, ‘About TV,’ or the manual – for mentions of DVB-T2 and HEVC/H.265. Alternatively, visit the manufacturer’s website and input your model number to confirm compatibility.
Continued HD Broadcasts
If your television isn’t compatible, don’t worry; older models still functioning well won’t experience a complete loss of service. During this initial phase, most channels will continue broadcasting in HD, ensuring uninterrupted viewing.
