Spain's DVB-T2 Transition Begins November 5th

On November 5th, Spain will initiate the first major phase of its transition to the DVB-T2 standard. This will enable the broadcasting of more Ultra High Definition (UHD or 4K) channels and the launch of La Séptima, a new channel.

Key Changes and What to Expect

The Boletín Oficial del Estado (BOE) has published the final schedule set by the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Function. Viewers will need to resynchronize their televisions to find the new channels.

No Immediate Channel Shutdown

Contrary to some concerns, existing HD channels will not disappear on November 5th. They will continue to broadcast alongside new UHD versions for a period. The government aims to modernize the TDT system without leaving behind viewers with older televisions.

Increased Channel Capacity

DVB-T2 significantly improves the use of available bandwidth, allowing for more channels or higher-quality broadcasts without requiring new frequencies. This brings TDT closer to the capabilities of streaming platforms like Netflix and Prime Video.

Second Phase and UHD Transition

A second phase, where all channels transition to UHD and HD versions disappear, will begin when a significant portion of Spanish televisions are compatible with DVB-T2. The exact date for this phase is currently unknown.

Resynchronization Required

For most viewers, the only required action on November 5th will be to resynchronize their television. Automatic channel scanning through the TV’s menu will locate both UHD and new channel broadcasts. Newer televisions compatible with DVB-T2 and UHD will be able to access 4K broadcasts as channels activate them.
