A rock formation photographed by orbital probes above Candor Chasma, deep inside the Valles Marineris canyon system, is making the rounds on social media, conspiracy forums, and — perhaps more tellingly — actual scientific discussion boards. The reason is straightforward: it looks, with uncomfortable precision, like a pyramid.

What the image actually shows

The photograph, captured by one of the several orbiters that have been mapping the Martian surface for decades, reveals an angular rock structure whose geometry is striking enough to stop the casual scroll. Candor Chasma is no stranger to unusual geology — it is one of the most geologically complex regions on the planet, carved by tectonic stress, ancient volcanic activity, and billions of years of wind erosion. But this particular formation has a sharpness to it that, under the right lighting, reads less like a natural outcrop and more like something deliberate.
