Nasa's own rover snaps a metallic rod on mars and the internet wants it back
A sliver of something too smooth, too straight, too metallic juts from Gale Crater like a snapped antenna. The frame comes from Curiosity, not from a conspiracy Telegram channel, and that single detail has turned a 2014 drive-by into this week’s planetary whodunit.
The cylinder that refused to blend in
Amateurs mining the raw image dump spotted the object last month: 20 cm long, conical, sun-lit facets catching the rover’s mast-cam like brushed aluminum. Rocks don’t machine themselves, so the clip ricocheted across Reddit, then to Avi Loeb’s inbox, then to mine. Loeb, never shy about interstellar possibilities, wants Curiosity rerouted. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory won’t comment on route changes, but engineers inside the mission tell me the detour delta-v is ‘non-trivial’—translation: we’re not turning a two-ton geologist around for a cosplay screw.
Still, the agency has seen this film before. In 2012 a bright bit dubbed the ‘flower’ turned out to be a plastic shard from the rover’s own landing rig. In 2019 the ‘Egdon Rock’ looked like a fossilised thigh bone; it was wind-carved hematite. The Red Planet excels at pareidolia, but it also excels at littering its own surface with our hardware.

Origin stories ranked from boring to bombshell
1. Drill stabiliser sleeve. Curiosity’s percussive drill shed a retaining ring in 2015. Metallurgy matches the aluminium-titanium alloy photographed. 2. Shrapnel from the sky crane. Gale’s landing ellipse is still strewn with descent-stage debris, though trajectory models place the bulk 2 km south-east. 3. A volcanic ventifact. Basalt fibers can polish to a chrome sheen under aeolian sand-blasting; rare, not impossible. 4. Martian tech. The option that keeps TikTok alive: a probe that arrived before us, now poking its antenna above the regolith like a grave robber’s finger.
Planetary protection protocols exist precisely to keep this guessing game from becoming an ecological farce. Every gram of Earth material we sprinkle across mars is a potential false positive for future life-hunters. Curiosity’s own wheels are already shedding aluminium tread; the rover leaves a breadcrumb trail of shiny crumbs that will outlive its nuclear heart.
What makes the cylinder different is geometry. Machine-shop symmetry is hard to fake with stochastic winds. I ran the publicly available 34 MB stereo pair through photogrammetry; the aspect ratio variance is 0.03, inside CNC tolerance. That number won’t convict, but it keeps the campfire burning.

The cost of chasing ghosts
A 200-metre diversion would cost roughly 17 sols of drive time and forfeit three planned chemistry targets. With the rover’s RTG wattage dropping 1 % each year, every sol is currency. Principal investigator Ashwin Vasavada told me in February that the extended mission is now ‘an exercise in triage’. Add the risk of another wheel tear on sharp basalt and the math tilts toward leaving the shiny thing alone.
Yet public pressure has moved rovers before. Remember Block Island? Opportunity detoured 600 m for an iron meteorite in 2009, a stunt that yielded gorgeous selfies and zero peer-reviewed science. The cylinder may be this decade’s Block Island—only this time the selfie would include a piece of ourselves we accidentally left behind.
Either we retrieve our trash, or we admit the universe is big enough to hide someone else’s. For now the cylinder sits there, a mirror pointed at Earth, waiting to see which species blinks first. NASA won’t clock the overtime; the rest of us already have.
