Ai siphons panasonic batteries: 80% of output locked for data centers
Panasonic has quietly sold four of every five lithium-ion cells it will make in 2026. The buyer is not Tesla, not Apple, not the world’s gadget makers — it is the cloud. Hyperscale AI clusters need the cylinders as emergency power, and they have paid upfront, in bulk, at a premium the consumer market cannot match.

Panasonic’s plants are being rewired
At the Osaka complex, automotive lines that once fed Tesla’s Nevada Gigafactory are being re-tooled for 4680 cells destined for uninterrupted power systems. Kansas will follow: the company is studying how to shift half of that plant’s output from electric-vehicle packs to server-grade batteries by 2027. The trade-off is explicit — fewer cells for cars, laptops, power tools, toys.
The math is brutal. A single 50 MW AI training hall burns through 20 shipping containers of cells just to keep GPUs alive during the 200 ms gap before diesel generators spin up. Multiply that by the 400 new data halls under construction on both sides of the Atlantic and you get a demand spike Panasonic calls “structural, not cyclical”.

Price shock is already baked in
Contract prices for cylindrical 18650 cells rose 14% last quarter, the first jump since the 2017 cobalt scare. Spot markets in Shenzhen report the same part trading at a 22% premium to February. Analysts at Benchmark Mineral Intelligence expect a further 30% climb before winter, enough to add $18 to the bill of materials of a premium laptop and $220 to the cost of a mid-range EV.
Panasonic’s answer is to triple domestic production, but the new lines come online in 2028 — two years after the crunch starts. Meanwhile, the firm is accelerating super-capacitor prototypes that could replace part of the buffer role by 2029. They charge in ninety seconds and cycle a million times, yet today they cost six times more per watt-hour and still need batteries alongside them.
