Ai-powered impersonation: cybersecurity's stealthiest threat emerges
The digital landscape is shifting, and not in a comforting way. Cybersecurity professionals are sounding the alarm: the ease with which artificial intelligence can now be leveraged for identity theft is rapidly escalating the risk for everyday users. Forget phishing emails; we're entering an era of AI-driven impersonation, and the defenses, while improving, are struggling to keep pace.
The rise of the synthetic self
Santiago Izquierdo, Samsung Iberia's Head of Technology, and Melchor Sanz, CTO of HP Iberia, both independently confirmed the unsettling truth: protecting yourself online is surprisingly straightforward, if you’re diligent. But the most immediate danger, they warn, isn't a complex malware attack. It's the increasingly simple act of someone using AI to convincingly mimic another individual. “The Technology has advanced to the point where it’s relatively easy to construct a digital persona that is virtually indistinguishable from the real thing,” Sanz stated.
The classic threats, of course, remain. Malicious emails laden with malware are still a persistent problem, as are unsecured public Wi-Fi networks – often overlooked vulnerabilities. Consider the scenario: Target’s recent foray into AI-powered shopping assistants, designed to purchase items on your behalf, highlights the potential for error. A simple miscalculation by the AI can translate into a direct financial loss for the user. But that’s a relatively benign outcome compared to the implications of identity theft.
Samsung is responding with a proactive approach, deploying alert systems that flag suspicious app permissions. Should an application attempt to access data beyond what’s considered normal, the user receives an immediate warning. HP, meanwhile, is incorporating tools capable of detecting AI-generated audio and video, a critical defense against deepfakes and other manipulated media. However, even these advancements are not a panacea.

The unsung hero: secure wi-fi
Izquierdo emphasized the crucial, yet often ignored, importance of enabling the “Secure Wi-Fi” function. This seemingly minor setting provides a vital layer of protection when connecting to public networks in airports, universities, or cafes. By encrypting your data, it effectively shields your information from interception by malicious actors lurking on the same network. “I’m genuinely baffled by the low adoption rate of Secure Wi-Fi,” Izquierdo remarked in an interview with COPE. “It’s a remarkably simple measure that renders access to your device from a public network practically impossible.”
Beyond Wi-Fi security, Sanz advocates for activating Secure Boot – another underutilized feature that prevents unauthorized modifications to the boot process – and full disk encryption. He also stressed the continued necessity of antivirus software, even in the age of AI. “Skipping antivirus protection these days is akin to leaving your front door wide open,” Sanz declared. “Even a free antivirus like Microsoft Defender is significantly better than nothing.”
The rules of engagement have fundamentally changed. Blanket trust is obsolete. The shift towards a “zero trust” security model – assuming that no user or device is inherently trustworthy – represents the most effective approach to mitigating cyberattacks and online scams. The recent dismissal of a municipal councilor, triggered by the use of AI to alter her official photograph, serves as a stark reminder of the blurring lines between reality and simulation. Now, it's not enough to simply recognize a threat; you must assume it exists everywhere.
The sophistication of these attacks necessitates a fundamental shift in mindset. Complacency is no longer an option. A recent study by CrowdStrike revealed a 400% increase in AI-powered phishing attempts in the last quarter alone.
