Alexa gets smarter: amazon unveils 'plus' with true assistant capabilities
For over eight years, Alexa has been a fixture in Spanish homes, evolving from a somewhat stilted voice assistant into a sophisticated digital butler. Now, with the arrival of Alexa+, Amazon is delivering a significant leap forward – and it's already available.
Beyond simple commands: alexa+ takes action
The core premise is simple: Alexa+ doesn’t just respond; it acts. Initially, Alexa offered basic convenience – setting timers, playing music, and managing reminders. But over the last three years, Spanish users have interacted with it more than 27 billion times. Alexa+ fundamentally changes that equation. Powered by Amazon Bedrock’s advanced language models, this iteration is capable of completing tasks end-to-end, moving far beyond simple suggestions.
Forget vague restaurant recommendations. Alexa+ can now actually book a table through services like TheFork, Covermanager, or even arrange leisure activities with Fever. And it learns your preferences, proactively suggesting purchases based on your expressed interests – even sending them to you when you indicate you want to buy.

A personal assistant, not just a chatbot
This shift elevates Alexa+ to something closer to a genuine personal assistant, a far cry from a basic chatbot. It’s about deep personalization. Alexa+ learns routines, tastes, and preferences, dynamically adapting its behavior. Think of it remembering family dietary restrictions, musical genres, or daily habits. The tone of voice even shifts – a noticeable difference between a celebratory shout after a sports victory and a subdued response following a defeat. Furthermore, utilizing voice and device recognition, it distinguishes between household members, tailoring responses accordingly. Need a specific playlist? Alexa will automatically select one based on who asked.

'Ambient intelligence' – the invisible assistant
Underpinning Alexa+ is the concept of ‘ambient intelligence’ – the goal is to embed Technology seamlessly, operating almost invisibly. Imagine your heating kicking on before you arrive, your coffee brewing as you wake, or notifications about new episodes of your favorite show popping up – all without constant interaction. But the real differentiator is the contextual understanding. You no longer need precise commands; a simple utterance like “It’s hot” will trigger the fan, or “It’s cold” will activate the heating. And, integrated with devices like Ring, Alexa+ can even analyze the home environment, answering specific queries – “Did a package arrive?” or “Did the dog go outside?” It’s a level of proactive awareness previously unheard of.

Privacy as a priority
Amazon insists on a robust privacy framework. Users have complete control via a dedicated panel, allowing them to review interactions, manage data storage, and delete information. This is a critical element, particularly given the increasing scrutiny surrounding data collection.
Availability and pricing
Alexa+ is currently available in Spain through a limited access program. Initially, it’s free, a strategic move to encourage adoption. However, a monthly subscription of €22.99 will eventually be required for Prime members, further strengthening Amazon’s ecosystem.
