Apple's smart glasses pivotal move, but siri's contextual awareness holds key
After a decade of struggling with Augmented Reality (AR) headsets, Apple is pivoting to smart glasses that look like something you'd actually wear, reports Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.
nDisplay-free design
nThe N50 smart glasses, code-named internally, will debut late this year or early 2027, with sales starting in 2027. Unlike Meta's Ray-Ban glasses, which have a miniature display, Apple's design eschews a screen, instead relying on cameras for photos and video, speakers for calls and music, and hands-free interaction via a significantly upgraded Siri coming with iOS 27.
n
Four frame styles
nApple is designing the frames in-house, rather than partnering with a fashion brand like EssilorLuxottica for Meta or Warby Parker for Google and Samsung. Four styles are in testing: a large Wayfarer-style, a slimmer rectangular option similar to Tim Cook's frames, larger oval frames, and a smaller refined oval. They'll be built from acetate, a premium material that holds up better than standard plastic, in black, ocean blue, and light brown.
n
Part of apple's ai wearables push
nThe N50 isn't a standalone play, but part of a strategy that includes camera-equipped AirPods and a camera-enabled pendant. All these devices aim to read your surroundings and feed context into Siri and Apple Intelligence, the AI underpinning Apple's ecosystem.
nA decade of ar headset struggles
nApple's original roadmap looked vastly different, with plans for an iPhone-tethered AR headset by 2020 and true AR glasses by 2022. However, only the Vision Pro headset, released years late, materialized, while proper AR glasses remain on the horizon.
nApple lags, but can still catch up
nWhile Meta has a significant head start with the Ray-Ban glasses selling well and display-enabled versions on the way, Apple's strategy of leveraging custom chips, retail presence, and tight iPhone integration could help it close the gap quickly.
nWhat makes apple's smart glasses compelling
nFor Apple's smart glasses to succeed, several factors will be crucial. The camera and Siri combo for hands-free tasks, tight integration with the iPhone and iOS, and premium design that looks like real glasses could all play a role. However, everything hinges on Siri's contextual awareness and usefulness.
nOnly time will tell if Apple can deliver on its promise and make the N50 smart glasses a must-have accessory for iPhone users.
