China zooms past the charging curve with 9-minute fill-ups

Electric vehicles are speeding ahead - not in terms of speed, but in the time it takes to recharge. And China is leading the charge.

Geely's lightning-fast 9-minute charging breakthrough

In a major leap forward, Chinese automaker Geely has unveiled a system capable of charging an EV from 10 to 97 percent in under nine minutes. This is a game-changer, bringing the refueling time for electric cars closer to the traditional gasoline pump experience.

Geely's achievement is the result of several innovations. First, their system uses 900-volt electrical architecture, significantly higher than most current vehicles. This allows for handling larger power loads without compromising efficiency. Second, they've developed a new battery, dubbed the 'Golden Brick,' specifically designed to withstand rapid charging without degrading quickly. The charging system can peak at 1,100 kW - far more than the typical 50-350 kW found at public charging stations in Europe.

This milestone isn't unique to Geely. Other Chinese manufacturers, like BYD, have also made similar announcements, with the competition intensifying. The goal is clear: making EV charging times a non-issue. However, experts acknowledge that having such high-power infrastructure in place is crucial - and that's a challenge still to be overcome.
