A bizarre turn of events has surfaced: a prototype of the upcoming Google Pixel Watch 5 was reportedly discovered submerged off the coast of St. Martin, thanks to a scuba diving enthusiast. The discovery, flagged by internet personality Randy Pitchford, throws a significant wrench into the already murky rumor mill surrounding Google’s smartwatch.

The story began with Randy Pitchford, former CEO of Gearbox, who posted on X about his friend’s rather serendipitous find – a partially submerged smartwatch. Initial images, shared alongside the post, clearly displayed the ‘Google’ and ‘Pixel Watch 5’ branding on the device’s rear. This prompted Pitchford and his friend to conclude it was indeed a Pixel Watch 5 prototype, despite the device’s inability to power on.

The device, seemingly lacking sufficient charge, was able to display the time thanks to its reserve power. Notably, the recovered prototype also exhibited some of Google’s standard health metrics – heart rate sensor, 45mm dimensions, Ultra Wideband (UWB) Technology, ElectroDermal Activity (EDA), IP68 water resistance, sleep tracking, and SpO2 monitoring – features already present in the Pixel Watch 4. It’s a disconcerting detail, suggesting a potential lack of significant design divergence.

Skepticism and synthetic shadows

While the find is undeniably intriguing, a healthy dose of skepticism is warranted. Tech analyst Reuben Adams has noted that the proliferation of sophisticated AI image manipulation tools makes it alarmingly easy to fabricate such a scenario. A simple alteration of the rear casing markings on an existing Pixel Watch 4 could convincingly mimic a ‘Watch 5’ prototype. The fact that the device is remarkably similar to its predecessor – mirroring the layout of markings precisely – only reinforces this suspicion.

Furthermore, Google’s established testing protocols typically involve controlled, outdoor environments, not clandestine dives in the Caribbean. The Oppo Find X9 Ultra leak earlier this year served as a stark reminder of how quickly unreleased hardware can surface. However, Pitchford’s reputation as a reliable internet personality lends a degree of credence to the claim, though even that’s not a guarantee against digital fakery.

The owner of the watch has now been identified, and arrangements are underway to retrieve the device.
