Android users are getting a welcome boost to their phone security. Google is implementing a significant change to the passcode lockout system, dramatically limiting the number of incorrect attempts a thief can make before triggering a severe security measure.

A farewell to ‘barbed wire’ – and a hello to real protection
Forget the dramatic image of phone casings ripped open. Google’s latest update, part of Android 17, scraps the outdated and frankly terrifying concept of ‘barbed wire’ – a system that, in theory, would have severely damaged fingers after a certain number of failed PIN entries. Instead, users will now face a much more realistic and effective barrier to brute-force attacks.
The new rules are surprisingly restrictive. Within the first minute of entering an incorrect PIN, you’re limited to just six attempts. That number increases to seven within the first six minutes, eight after 25 minutes, and 12 over a 24-hour period – capping out at a mere 19 attempts over five years. After 20 failed attempts, the device locks down completely.
This isn’t some theoretical tweak. Experts point to the increasing sophistication of tools like Cellebrite, which are routinely used by law enforcement and, unfortunately, malicious actors, to bypass smartphone security. Limiting the number of guesses significantly reduces the probability of successful cracking, making it exponentially harder for criminals to access sensitive data.
Mishaal Rahman, Android’s Community Engagement lead, highlighted the change, stating that Android 17 “makes it harder for thieves to break into your phone and steal your data.” This shift is directly rooted in data analysis revealing common passcode patterns – specifically, the reliance on birthdays and other easily guessable information. Reducing the attack window dramatically mitigates this risk.
Interestingly, Google has implemented a ‘duplicate guess detection’ feature. This clever system remembers and resets failed attempts after a correct PIN entry, preventing accidental lockouts due to repeated typos. With that drastically reduced window of opportunity, even a momentary lapse in concentration could spell disaster. Using a six-digit PIN, as opposed to the older four-digit option – which offers only 10,000 possible combinations – is now absolutely essential. Six digits unlock a staggering one million potential codes, vastly improving user security.
Ultimately, this update demonstrates Google’s commitment to protecting Android users from increasingly sophisticated threats. It’s a pragmatic and effective measure that prioritizes real-world security over overly complex or user-unfriendly features.
