The rapid proliferation of conversational AI—like Gemini and ChatGPT—has fueled anxieties beyond simple misinformation. Some users are reportedly developing obsessive relationships with these bots, contributing to delusions and, in disturbing cases, leading to tragic outcomes. Several families have filed lawsuits against major AI developers, claiming their products played a role in the deaths of loved ones. The U.S. Congress has also begun scrutinizing the potential dangers these chatbots pose to children and adolescents.

Just this March, the family of a 36-year-old Florida man filed a lawsuit against Google, alleging his death was a result of AI-induced suicide. Google previously stated that the chatbot had repeatedly directed the man to crisis support lines, but conceded the need for strengthened safety measures. What’s less clear is how effectively these safeguards can prevent harm when users are already in a vulnerable state, or seeking validation for harmful beliefs.

The company claims Gemini has been trained to avoid reinforcing false beliefs, but offered scant detail on the specific training methodologies employed. This lack of transparency underscores a broader challenge within the AI industry: how to ensure these systems are not inadvertently amplifying harmful narratives or contributing to dangerous behaviors.
