London is deploying a radical new generation of speed cameras – radar systems that don’t flash, don’t rely on painted lines, and operate entirely out of sight. For decades, drivers have associated speed enforcement with the sudden, jarring flash of a traditional radar gun and the stark white lines painted on roadways. But this new Technology, utilizing 4D radar and high-definition cameras, operates with a chillingly subtle efficiency. The cameras, strategically positioned, can monitor up to five lanes simultaneously, capturing vehicles travelling in both directions – all without creating any visual cues for drivers to anticipate a check.
The Key Innovation: 4D Radar The core of the system lies in its ability to analyze vehicle movement in three dimensions, alongside speed and direction. Combined with the camera’s high-resolution imaging, the radar can identify vehicles exceeding the speed limit, precisely pinpoint their location, and document the infraction – all while remaining completely undetected by the driver.
