Forecast models give only a 5-to-10 percent shot at thunderstorms through the entire five-day window that stretches to 7 April. The trade-off: humidity so thick you can wring the air. “Think Miami in July, only with a rocket,” Burger shrugged.

By the time the crew—Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canadian rookie Jeremy Hansen—completes their ten-day figure-eight around the Moon, the same fragile balloons will long have dissolved into sea spray. But their 90 minutes of wind data will live on as the invisible scaffolding that let humanity’s next lunar odyssey leave on time.
