Florida’s crawlerway groaned under 2 600 t of aluminium and ambition at dawn on Friday as NASA began the ten-hour creep of the Space Launch System—topped by an Orion capsule that will, in 24 days, carry four humans around the Moon for the first time in half a century. The 6.4 km journey from the Vehicle Assembly Building to launch complex 39B opened the final act of a dress rehearsal that has already swallowed one rollback, a helium plumbing fix and a wholesale battery swap.
April launch window rides on wind gods and one repaired umbilical
Controllers halted the roll shortly after 06:00 local time when ground anemometers touched 25 kt, the safety ceiling for the 131 m stack. Once the breeze dropped, crawler-transporter 2 resumed its 1.6 km h crawl, arriving at the pad shortly before sunset. The stop-start choreography is minor compared with the engineering drama that forced the rocket back indoors three weeks ago. A helium pressurisation line feeding the Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage was found to be choking on a misaligned seal, starving upper-stage engines of the inert gas they need to prevent cavitation. The discovery ended a 21 February tanking test that had otherwise ticked every green box.
Inside the VAB, technicians replaced the errant joint, then took the opportunity to change out every flight-termination battery—eight on the solid boosters, four on the core stage, two on the upper stage—and reload the crew escape system’s power pack. They also re-torqued a liquid-oxygen interface plate that had shown micro-fissures in X-ray scans. “We don’t fly with maybes,” said deputy programme manager Amit Kshatriya, summing up a 19-day blitz that cost NASA an estimated $37 million in overtime and contractor penalties.

Four astronauts, ten days, one lunar fly-by
Commander Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, mission specialist Christina Koch and Canadian Jeremy Hansen will ride a free-return trajectory that skims 130 km above the far side of the Moon before slingshotting back to Earth. The flight plan, locked in after 18 000 hours of simulation, demands perfect alignment of orbital mechanics, Pacific splashdown weather and a launch window that opens at 08:24 Eastern on 1 April and closes 120 minutes later. Miss that, and the next shot slips to 3 May.
NASA needs this mission to prove life-support reliability before Artemis III attempts a South-Pole landing in 2026. The agency has already burned through $93 billion on the Artemis trilogy; another rollback would push the programme into FY25 appropriations hearings just as congressional auditors are asking why each SLS core stage now costs $2.5 billion—twice the 2012 estimate.
At pad 39B, engineers will begin a final week of leak checks, ordnance installs and a 47-hour countdown rehearsal that ends with the loading of 2 700 t of cryogenic propellant. If the helium behaves, the stack stays. If not, the crawler will once again haul America’s Moon rocket back to the barn, and the clock on the first crewed lunar voyage since 1972 will reset to zero. The space agency has no third rollback in the schedule—only an empty sky waiting for four astronauts and a rocket that must, at last, fly.
