Nasa taps spanish engineer to run its $20bn permanent moon base
Carlos García-Galán, the kid who left Torre del Mar at 18 with a one-way ticket to Florida and a stubborn dream of wearing the worm-logo patch, now holds the keys to humanity’s first off-world homestead. NASA late Thursday named the 48-year-old Spaniard program executive for the Moon Base initiative, the agency’s most expensive crewed endeavour since Apollo, with $20 billion on the table through 2032 and the first ground-breaking scheduled for 2029.
From málaga to mission control
He started as a shuttle flight controller in 1997, logging night shifts in Houston while classmates partied in Gainesville. Four years later Honeywell lured him away to write fault-management code for what would become Orion; Lockheed Martin still ships his algorithms on every crew capsule. García-Galán returned to NASA in 2008, this time negotiating launch windows with Russian controllers in Korolev and signing off on every truss segment bolted to the ISS. The promotion sequence is almost boring: silver medal, exceptional-service ribbon, the coveted Snoopy—yet each citation tracks the slow, invisible labour that keeps astronauts breathing.

Gateway becomes ground zero
Since January he has served as deputy director of Gateway, the lunar-orbiting staging post meant to pre-figure the surface outpost. That job was the audition. Now he inherits a three-phase roadmap: reliable crew access by 2028, construction sprint from 2029-31, then year-long rotations beginning 2032. The brief is managerial, not geological; he will not live under regolith but will decide which payloads fly, which contractors stay solvent and which schedule slips get swallowed by Congress.
The stakes are already measurable. Last month NASA’s inspector general warned the mobile habitat’s life-support unit is 17 % overweight and $340 million over initial estimates. García-Galán’s first task is to stop that bleed before the next budget mark-up. He will do it from a corner office at Johnson Space Center, not a catwalk on Shackleton Crater, yet every gram he approves will determine who sleeps under Earthrise eight years from now.
Europe, meanwhile, watches from the sidelines it once tried to command. ESA floated a permanent base in 2016, then shelved the plan when member states balked at the price tag. The water-ice maps its lunar orbiter produced are now reference material for NASA’s polar site selection. García-Galán’s Spanish passport is a reminder that talent, not treasury, finally writes the rules.
The agency has already spent $4.3 billion of the projected total; the remaining $15.7 billion must stretch across Artemis IV, V and VI, plus the uncrewed cargo runs that will pre-position sintered-brick roads and radiation-shielded hangars. If he keeps the ledger balanced, the first American woman and the first European will step into a sunless crater where the temperature swings 280 °C between noon and night, protected by machines whose lineage begins with a boy who once stared at the same Moon from a rooftop in Andalucía.
