Oppo bets on glass, not ai hype, to reclaim the zoom crown
Oppo will dial the calendar back to 2023 on 21 April—deliberately. While rivals stuff pocket computers with diffusion models nobody asked for, the Find X9 Ultra will ship with a 230 mm periscope that bends light five times inside three elements, a 200 MP short-tele sibling, and a 7 050 mAh silicon-carbon slab that dwarfs Samsung’s best. Translation: hardware first, marketing slides later.
A periscope that refuses to die
The industry buried 10× glass two years ago, swapping raw focal length for sensor crop and algorithmic hallucination. Oppo’s engineers called the obituary premature. Their Quintuple Prism Reflection module folds the optical path into 33 % less volume than Samsung’s folded zoom, trading AI guesswork for 10× native magnification. Sony’s 1/1.12-inch LYT-900 and a matching 200 MP OmniVision companion do the wide and mid-duty; the periscope sits on a Samsung JNL sensor behind an f/3.5 aperture. Five cameras, zero fluff.
Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5—Qualcomm’s 3 nm second-gen—keeps the pipeline humming. 16 GB of LPDDR5X and 512 GB UFS 4.1 supply the buffer, while a 6.82-inch flat AMOLED avoids the curved-edge distortion that still plays havoc with edge pixels. Flat also means film-makers can matte the frame without optical surprises.
Battery race? already lapped
Galaxy S26 Ultra stops at 5 000 mAh. Xiaomi 17 Ultra squeezes 5 930 mAh into a carbon-silicon sandwich. Oppo shoves 2 000 mAh on top of that—7 050 mAh—and still pumps 100 W wired, 50 W wireless. The maths is brutal: an hour of 8K zoom recording before the first thermal throttle, then another twenty minutes before the yellow bar appears. No AI frame-interpolation required when the sensor outruns the battery.
Global ROM lands day-one, sidestepping the notification purgatory that kneecapped last year’s Chinese variants. Android 16 under ColorOS 16 keeps the iOS cosplay to a minimum—Oppo’s own icons, own quick-settings, own gestures. Banking apps, Android Auto, Netflix L1: all certified, no VPN gymnastics.
China’s lab beats the marketing department
Samsung’s pitch this season is “AI that summarises your voice mail.” Google’s is “AI that rewrites your text tone.” Oppo’s counter-memo is a flow-chart: glass, sensor, battery, done. The Find X9 Ultra will not write poetry, but it will resolve a licence plate at 300 m without ringing artefacts. In a market addicted to software sleight-of-hand, that’s the most disruptive feature of all: evidence you can touch.
