Oppo is done playing catch-up. The company has confirmed that its upcoming Find X9 Ultra, set to launch in China on April 21, will carry a 50-megapixel telephoto lens with 10x optical zoom — a specification that, frankly, has no business existing inside a smartphone chassis. And Oppo knows it. Pete Lau, Senior Vice President and Chief Product Officer, put it bluntly: "It's your next camera."
The engineering problem nobody else solved
To understand why this matters, you need to know what every other manufacturer has quietly accepted as a hard limit. Getting meaningful optical zoom into a phone requires physical distance — the kind of distance a flat slab of glass and aluminum simply cannot offer. The workaround the industry settled on was the periscope lens, which bends light sideways through the body of the device. But even that trick has a ceiling. Most flagship phones top out at 4x or 5x optical zoom because the folded light path can only stretch so far before the module becomes too long to fit.
Oppo's answer is what the company calls a Quintuple Prism Reflection Periscope Structure. Rather than a single fold, light bounces through five separate reflections before it hits the sensor. The result is a dramatically longer effective focal path compressed into a module that is, according to Oppo, 30 percent shorter than what a conventional design would require. That is not a marginal improvement. That is a rethink of the geometry.

Optical purity as a selling point
The zoom mechanism alone would be a story. But Oppo has paired it with what it calls the Pristine Optical Path Architecture — a prismatic assembly built from three precision-machined elements separated by a nanometric-scale aperture and a specialized air capsule. The purpose is to minimize optical aberration at maximum zoom, the kind of chromatic fringing and softness that tends to expose telephoto smartphone photography as a glorified digital crop.
Rounding it out is a Sensor Shift optical image stabilization system, which compensates for hand tremor at the full 10x reach. At that focal length, even a slight tremor is magnified into a blurred mess. Oppo is betting this combination — prism geometry, optical purity, and mechanical stabilization — produces results that justify Lau's provocative claim.
The collaboration with Hasselblad adds another layer. The Swedish camera maker has been lending its color science and tuning expertise to OnePlus and Oppo devices for several years now, and the Find X9 Ultra represents what both companies are framing as the fullest expression of that partnership yet. Hasselblad's involvement in a 10x optical system is a different proposition than slapping a logo on a color profile.

Oppo was here first — and then the industry retreated
There is a historical footnote worth examining. Oppo was the first manufacturer to put a 10x periscope system into a consumer smartphone, back in 2019 with the Reno 10x Zoom, which offered a 6x optical zoom with a 13-megapixel sensor in a hybrid configuration that reached 10x. Samsung didn't match that benchmark until 2022, when the Galaxy S22 Ultra shipped with two telephoto lenses — one at 3x, one at 10x.
What happened next is the part the industry rarely discusses. Rather than pushing further, most manufacturers quietly dialed back. The Galaxy S25 Ultra ships with a 5x periscope. Apple's iPhone 15 Pro Max went to 5x and called it a breakthrough. The trend moved backward, driven by a combination of module size constraints, battery considerations, and, one suspects, a certain reluctance to make the camera system the dominant engineering challenge of the whole device.
Oppo has now gone in the opposite direction. Whether the Find X9 Ultra can genuinely replace a professional camera is a claim that will be tested the moment reviewers get it in their hands on April 21. What is not in dispute is that a 50-megapixel, 10x optical zoom inside a phone represents a specification that the rest of the industry told consumers was physically impossible — until it wasn't.
