Oppo's find x9 ultra: 10x zoom & modular camera redefine mobile photography?

Oppo is aiming to disrupt the smartphone photography landscape with the upcoming Find X9 Ultra, slated for an April 21st reveal. Forget incremental upgrades—this phone could pack a serious punch, particularly in the zoom department, and Oppo executives are dropping tantalizing hints to fuel the anticipation.

A zoom revolution: beyond the usual 6x

While the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 1 chipset, large battery, and vibrant display are noteworthy, it's the camera setup that's generating the most buzz. Oppo is doubling down on telephoto capabilities, equipping the Find X9 Ultra with two dedicated telephoto lenses. The upgrade? The secondary unit jumps from a standard 6x optical zoom to a remarkable 10x. But it doesn't stop there.

Most flagship phones currently max out around 6x zoom – think iPhone, Samsung’s Galaxy line, and even Xiaomi. Huawei’s Pura 80 Ultra stands out with its 9.4x zoom, while older Galaxy S Ultra models briefly offered a 10x option before reverting to 5x. Why the shift back? The pursuit of the 'perfect' zoom range is an ongoing debate – 2x might suffice for some, 3x-5x suits many, and 6x-9x caters to enthusiasts. Oppo seems to be betting on the 'more is more' approach, pushing beyond the established boundaries.

Zhuo Shijie, Oppo's Find Series product manager, explains the strategy: instant long-range zoom without the need for bulky external lenses. The built-in 10x system, co-engineered with Hasselblad, promises detailed images with consistent color tuning. But Oppo isn't abandoning the idea of ultimate optical precision.

The modular approach: phone + dedicated lens

Recognizing the limitations of smartphone lenses, Oppo is also developing a separate, external telephoto module. Think of it as a traditional camera lens, packed with complex glass elements designed to maximize light capture and clarity. This creates a unique dual system: the phone handles everyday zoom needs, while the add-on caters to specialized photography—concerts, wildlife, architectural detail—where every millimeter counts.

A 10x optical zoom translates to approximately a 230mm focal length. This offers a significant advantage – the ability to capture distant subjects with usable quality, something often impossible with standard phone cameras. Imagine snapping clear photos of a concert performer from afar or documenting wildlife without disturbing them. Travel photography also benefits, allowing you to zoom in on intricate architectural details.

However, there’s a trade-off. A narrower field of view can easily lead to disconnected or overly-tight photos, compressing perspective and flattening depth. Distant mountains might look stunning, but shots with foreground and background elements can fall flat. It’s a balancing act between reach and context.
