Orange races to lock 5 gbps as the real speed while rivals chase 10 gbps headlines
Orange quietly flipped the switch on XGS-PON two years ago, but the marketing war has only now detonated. Movistar promises 10 Gbps to 31 million homes; DIGI already advertises the full 10 Gbps; Orange sticks at 5 Gbps and dares anyone to prove it’s a lie.
The gamble is deliberate. Inside network control rooms engineers have pencilled a simple equation: headline rate minus forward-error correction, TCP overhead, GPON encapsulation, Wi-Fi 6 contention, distance, micro-bends, ageing splitters. The result rarely clears 8 Gbps even when the optical budget is perfect. Orange prefers to sell the number that survives that gauntlet.
Why 5 gbps is the new ceiling
DIGI’s PRO-DIGI tariff still prints “10 Gbps” on every billboard, yet the fine print concedes “velocidad máxima a nivel binario”. Translation: raw laser pulses, not payload. Subtract 20 % for Reed-Solomon codes, another 5 % for GEM framing, burst-mode lasers eating guard intervals, and the customer sees 7.8 Gbps on a speed-test server hosted inside the same metro. Orange marketers now wave that screenshot in every briefing.
The Madrid-based carrier will charge €5 on top of the 1 Gbps tier, €15 if the base is 600 Mbps, for a profile capped at 4.7 Gbps usable after overheads. The 10 Gbps tier remains locked inside convergent packages—fiber, 5G mobile, Orange TV—and only in ten cities served by the new Livebox Infinity router. Even there, the line card is still XGS-PON; the extra wavelength is held in reserve until ONUs drop below €120.

Movistar’s scale threat
Movistar’s announcement landed like a hammer: same XGS-PON electronics, same Nokia chassis, but a rollout calendar that dwarfs every competitor. Parent Telefónica plans to swap every SC/APC connector in its footprint—coastal holiday apartments, mountain hamlets, 1960s blocks with risers barely wide enough for a micro-duct. The economies of scale will push wholesale prices down before Orange has finished lab-testing its 10 Gbps firmware.
Orange’s answer is a loyalty bundle. Movistar Plus+ now streams Champions League free even for non-customers; Orange counters with zero-rating for its own 5G slices, plus a cloud gaming instance running on edge servers inside the central office. Latency to the gaming pod: 1.3 ms. That metric matters more than raw downstream once bandwidth crosses 2 Gbps.

The china laser wildcard
While European telcos slug it out over passive optics, China’s Xi’an Institute launched a 10 GHz laser relay satellite last month. Ground stations in Chongqing already push 200 Gbps through free-space optics. The geopolitical message is not subtle: fiber can be bypassed from orbit. Orange engineers tracking the experiment note that the downlink uses the same 1270 nm window as XGS-PON upstream. If cheap photonic integrated circuits reach volume, today’s PON could look as quaint as ADSL.
For now, the scoreboard is simple. DIGI: 10 Gbps on paper, 8 Gbps in practice, nationwide. Movistar: 10 Gbps promise, 31 million homes, calendar unknown. Orange: 5 Gbps today, same number tomorrow, no excuses. In a market addicted to zeroes on glossy adverts, the operator betting on honesty may be the only one not forced to retrofit its story later.
