Pixel 10 pro flashlight burns its own lens, users warn

A $999 phone should not barbecue itself. Yet Pixel 10 Pro owners on Reddit are posting images of melted flashlight lenses, some with charred craters punched straight through the diffuser, after leaving the LED on longer than usual.

The first sign is a brown halo that refuses to wipe off; the next is a crater that looks like a cigarette burn. One owner claims the hot phone branded a palm-rest shaped scar into a MacBook. Google has not issued a statement, and the incident tracker inside the Pixel community forum remains at zero.

Thermal safeguards may be napping

Every flagship sold in 2025 ships with a temperature sensor tied to the LED driver. When the junction creeps past 85 °C the firmware is supposed to throttle current or kill the light. Either the Pixel 10 Pro’s threshold is set too high or the sensor is reading the wrong spot; the result is a 5 W emitter cooking its own polycarbonate window until it carbonizes.

Android 16 QPR3 added a brightness slider that lets power users push the torch to 1 200 lumens—double the default. Google buried the toggle inside Settings> Safety & emergency, an afterthought for most, but a temptation for campers and gig-economy delivery riders who treat the phone as a work light.

Reddit noise versus engineering data

Reddit noise versus engineering data

Scorch posts cluster around two subreddits and a Korean forum, totaling fewer than forty corroborated cases. That is a rounding error against five million units shipped, but the failure mode is binary: once the lens bubbles, the damage is permanent and the repair cost—$229 for a rear-camera module swap—lands on the owner after the warranty expires.

Inside Google’s issue tracker, engineers have quietly tagged a related thread “flashlightLensDiscoloration” and requested bug reports from affected devices. The triage note asks for battery temperature logs, a signal that someone in Mountain View is already heat-mapping the problem.

Until an OTA arrives, the safest move is to cap torch sessions at three minutes and avoid pocket carry while the light is on. If the lens already shows a dark pit, back up your data and open a support ticket; Google is replacing units under the standard warranty, no questions asked—for now.

Flagship phones have become pocket suns. When the bulb that finds your keys can also brand your desk, the price of innovation is literally burned into the hardware.
