Samsung's battery bottleneck: u.s. regulations stifle innovation
Samsung’s ambition for a truly dominant Android experience—one fueled by massive battery capacity—is consistently thwarted by a surprising constraint: U.S. federal regulations.
Why 10,000 mah remains a distant dream
For years, Chinese smartphone manufacturers have been pushing the boundaries of battery size, routinely shipping devices with 7,300 mAh, 10,000 mAh, and even exceeding 12,000 mAh cells. Samsung, however, remains tethered to a considerably smaller capacity, largely due to restrictions on lithium-ion battery transportation within the United States.
The core issue centers around 49 CFR 173.185, which mandates that single-cell lithium-ion batteries in smartphones shouldn't exceed 20 watt-hours (Wh). This seemingly technical regulation has effectively handcuffed Samsung’s ability to deploy the truly impressive battery solutions offered by its rivals. Calculating the Wh for the Galaxy S26 Ultra, with its 5,000 mAh cell and 3.88V voltage, reveals a capacity of just 19.4 Wh – comfortably below the permitted limit.

Silicon-carbon: the path blocked by safety concerns
The reason for this persistent limitation isn't simply bureaucratic; it stems from a critical incident in 2016 involving the Galaxy Note 7. A battery defect—characterized by a flammable liquid and a susceptibility to catching fire when punctured—led to widespread recalls, airline bans, and a significant reputational hit for Samsung.
The company’s subsequent implementation of a rigorous 8-point battery safety checklist, designed to preempt similar issues, has become a significant barrier. While silicon-carbon battery Technology offers the potential for drastically increased capacities within a similar footprint, this Technology also presents an added layer of scrutiny and testing, delaying its adoption.

A glimmer of hope: silicon-carbon trials underway
However, the future may hold a change. Recent reports indicate Samsung is actively experimenting with 12,000 mAh, 18,000 mAh, and 20,000 mAh silicon-carbon batteries – all utilizing dual-cell designs to circumvent the 20 Wh limit. A trusted source, Schrödinger, suggests the Galaxy S27 Ultra could be the first Samsung device to embrace this Technology, though longevity concerns remain a key hurdle. Despite these promising developments, the regulatory landscape continues to dictate Samsung’s battery strategy, preventing the company from unleashing the full potential of its mobile devices.
