The tech landscape in 2026 is increasingly defined by foldable devices, and Samsung, once the undisputed leader, faces a growing challenge. While the Galaxy S26 series has already landed, attention now turns to the latter half of the year's flagship releases, with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Flip 8 taking center stage. However, a closer look reveals a potential stumbling block for Samsung – the Z Fold 8’s incremental upgrades may not be enough to fend off rising competition, particularly from Apple’s encroaching iPhone Fold.
The fold 6 shadow: a predecessor's lingering flaws
To understand the Z Fold 8’s predicament, one must revisit its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Fold 6. That device, while innovative, was hampered by a noticeable inner screen crease and a somewhat bulky design – shortcomings that didn’t quite measure up against rivals already refining their foldable offerings. Design and Dimensions: A Slimmer Silhouette The Z Fold 8 appears to be adopting the sleeker design language introduced with the Z Fold 7, shrinking the overall footprint. Expect a thickness of approximately 8.9mm when folded and 4.2mm when unfolded – a significant improvement over the Z Fold 6's 12.1mm folded and 5.6mm unfolded dimensions. While the Armor Aluminum frame and Gorilla Glass Victus 2 rear panels return, there's a rumor of a shift from the Z Fold 7's titanium hinge to a carbon fiber-reinforced plastic one, potentially lightening the build.
Display evolution: crease reduction and brightness boost
Perhaps the most anticipated upgrade lies in the display. Samsung is reportedly employing a new dual-glass pane Technology, aiming to drastically reduce the visibility of the inner screen crease – a feature also expected on the iPhone Fold and already implemented in the Oppo Find N6.
