Samsung's folding ambitions stretch it too thin?

As Samsung prepares to launch two new book-style foldables this year, a fresh leak from reliable leaker Ice Universe may be a sign the company is biting off more than it can chew.

A wider foldable, but at what cost?

A video posted by Ice Universe appears to compare cases for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and its wider counterpart, the Z Fold 8 Wide. While more options are always welcome, the video may not be as promising as expected.

The Fold 8 Wide could adopt a passport form factor when unfolded, meaning it would be taller and thinner than the standard Fold 8. It's also likely to sport a dual-camera setup, a significant downgrade from the triple-camera system found on flagship devices.

In contrast, the Fold 8's case seems to fit the Fold 7 almost perfectly, suggesting the design may remain largely unchanged.

So why would anyone choose the Fold 8 Wide over the regular model? Compactness and a lower price could be convincing factors, but enhanced multitasking abilities might be the clincher for some users.

However, concerns arise about the usability of a wider device. Reaching the top of the outer screen could become an issue, and the device may feel cramped when typing. Additionally, users might need to open their palms wider, a potential problem in itself.

Despite these reservations, Samsung is giving consumers a choice by introducing a new model instead of modifying the Fold 8 design. Whether this wider foldable takes off remains to be seen.
