Samsung’s processor gamble: exynos 2700 benchmarks reveal a shift
After years of lagging behind Qualcomm, Samsung appears to be finally gaining traction with its in-house mobile processors. Early Geekbench results for the Exynos 2700 chipset are generating considerable buzz, suggesting a significant step forward for the South Korean tech giant.
A promising start, but challenges remain
The benchmark scores, spotted by Abhishek Yadav, show the Exynos 2700 CPU achieving a single-core performance of 2,603 and a multi-core score of 10,350. While not earth-shattering, this represents a tangible improvement and underlines Samsung’s continued investment in its silicon roadmap. The prototype device, running Android 16 with 12GB of RAM, is equipped with a 2.78GHz prime core, four 2.88GHz performance cores, a 2.30GHz low-power core, and a 2.40GHz efficiency core, alongside an Xclipse 970 GPU.
It’s crucial to remember that this is an early test, utilizing an engineering board – a clear indicator of Samsung’s deliberate approach to pushing the boundaries. The ERD identifier further reinforces the notion that this is a preliminary build, potentially even an early iteration of the software packaging for the Galaxy S27.

Process node and performance boost
Samsung is targeting an improved 2nm process node for the Exynos 2700, following on from the success of the 2nm Exynos 2600. This upgrade is projected to deliver a 12% performance uplift and a 25% reduction in power consumption. The company is also reportedly prioritizing independent GPU development, relying entirely on its own resources for the Xclipse 970, rather than leveraging assistance from AMD – a bold strategic move.

Qualcomm still reigns supreme
Despite these advancements, the Galaxy S26 Ultra’s continued reliance on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors highlights the persistent skepticism surrounding Samsung’s in-house efforts. The S26 Ultra’s predecessor, the S25 series, mirrored this strategy. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 is anticipated to launch alongside Apple’s A20 Pro for the iPhone 18 Pro, both representing significant advancements over current Samsung offerings. The ongoing dependence on Qualcomm underscores the market’s continued trust in established players.
The potential for a more competitive processor landscape is undeniably appealing. However, Samsung needs to decisively bridge the performance gap to truly challenge Qualcomm’s dominance.
