While memory and storage shortages have already led to higher prices for android flagships, the latest leak suggests that processor prices are also on the rise. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, set to power the leading android flagships, may cost significantly more than its predecessor, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5.

According to a breakdown by leaker Abhishek Yadav, the current flagship processor ranges from $240 to $280. In contrast, the estimated cost of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, released last year, was reportedly capped at $130. The new pricing looks even more shocking when compared to the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, which was already twice as expensive as the 8 Gen 1.

Such a substantial jump in such a short time could be the best explanation for the rumored change in flagship strategy across android manufacturers. Several brands are rumored to have different tiers of flagship devices, with Qualcomm also reportedly planning two versions of the upcoming flagship processor - a standard Snapdragon 8 Elite 6 for some leading phones and a more powerful Pro edition for upcoming Ultra flagships like the Samsung Galaxy S27 Ultra and devices from Vivo and Oppo.

While there's still uncertainty surrounding the exact specifications and pricing of these dual Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 variants, one thing is clear: the only certain aspect of upcoming smartphones is that they'll be more expensive than before.
