Spain leaps into the future with cashless payments

Spain is set to revolutionize the way we pay, with cash giving way to contactless transactions using credit/debit cards, mobile devices, smartwatches, and even Bizum in select establishments. Consumers are increasingly opting for the convenience of online and in-store purchases. Born as a system for instant peer-to-peer money transfers, Bizum is now being used as a payment method in stores and online platforms.

Bizum's arrival in physical stores was only a matter of time, given the platform's massive popularity in Spain, with millions of daily transactions between users of various banks. The official rollout begins May 18, though not all users will be eligible initially. CaixaBank, Banco Sabadell, and Bankinter customers will be the first to try this new payment method, with others to follow shortly.

The functionality of Bizum in-store payments will be very similar to the current system, but adapted for brick-and-mortar establishments. Users can utilize the bank app or Bizum Pay as if it were a digital card integrated into their mobile wallet. Paying with Bizum will be extremely simple: just bring the device close to the payment terminal and enable NFC for contactless transactions. The process is identical to using any other credit/debit card or transit card in a digital wallet.

Bizum's innovative approach is linked to a mobile number and bank account, not a traditional credit/debit card for the transaction. The money transfers directly from one account to another, regardless of the bank, using the associated phone number. This reduces reliance on international payment giants like Visa and Mastercard, while also benefiting businesses, who can receive funds almost instantly. However, the service won't be free – merchants will have to bear a commission, likely similar to traditional systems but possibly lower.
