SpinnyOne, a PocketQube – essentially a satellite the size of a shoebox – was developed and built in a remarkable six months. The satellite's primary function, beyond establishing basic communications, is to test secure, low-power data transmission and microgravity experiments in the harsh environment of low Earth orbit (LEO). This particular mission saw Hydra Space acting as a technological facilitator for Spinning Around, a startup from Edinburgh, UK, hosting a microgravity experiment aboard.
The collaboration highlights Hydra Space’s growing 'in-orbit validation' service, offering commercial and institutional clients a platform to test their technologies in real-world space conditions. While many companies dream of space access, Hydra is turning that dream into a tangible service, offering rapid deployment cycles – a critical differentiator in a rapidly evolving market.
The satellite carries a prototype of optimized digital voice Technology designed to operate within a very limited bandwidth. Perhaps surprisingly, initial tests involve transmitting excerpts from 'Don Quixote,' a nod to Spain’s literary heritage, to validate a secure communications infrastructure for defense and security operations. Early signals received just hours after launch confirmed the satellite's functionality.
