Stop aiming your router antennas: the doughnut trick that fixes dead zones
Most people treat router antennas like laser pointers, swivelling them toward the sofa and wondering why Netflix still buffers. The cold truth: those plastic sticks never fire a straight line; they belch a toroidal cloud of radio doughnuts that shoots sideways, not forward.

Engineers call it a "toroidal radiation pattern"—a fat, ring-shaped bubble that leaves the antenna at 90 degrees. Point the stalk at the TV and you just parked the hole of the doughnut on top of the television. Result: full bars on the floor above, zero in the living room.
Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7 radios pump more bits into that bubble than ever, yet households still buy repeaters because two rookie mistakes sabotage every packet: antennas clustered like a posy of flowers, and routers locked inside TV cabinets with the Wi-Fi-eating microwave.
Colin Packham, senior analyst at TechCurrent, measured throughput in a three-storey London terrace. A single vertical antenna on channel 100 delivered 980 Mbit/s in the same room, 110 Mbit/s on the floor above, 14 Mbit/s below. Tilting the same antenna 45 degrees lifted the ground-floor score to 280 Mbit/s without touching firmware or firmware budgets.

Triangulate the doughnuts, not the devices
Modern units ship with three or four swivels because MU-MIMO wants spatial diversity. The golden rule: never duplicate angles. One vertical, one horizontal, the remainder at 30-degree offsets. This cross-polarises the fields and scatters the rings into overlapping ellipses, giving phones in pockets and consoles behind walls at least one polarisation match on every frame.
Metal mirrors, aquariums and LED dimmers murder 5 GHz more brutally than 2.4 GHz, so elevation trumps orientation. A router parked on the floor bleeds 60 % of its energy into the carpet; mount it two metres high and the same radio suddenly blankets an extra room. Kitchen microwaves leak a 2.4 GHz comb that chews 40 MHz of spectrum—relocate the router before you blame the ISP.
Snelling’s lab at MakeUseOf clocked a 2019 802.11ac model against a 2023 Wi-Fi 7 unit. The newer box gained only 12 % throughput with default settings; after antenna triangulation the delta jumped to 220 %. Hardware helps, but geometry is free.
Stop wrapping foil round plastic stalks. Start treating each antenna as a bakery that must toss overlapping pastries into every corner. Do it once, tonight, and the next firmware update will actually arrive instead of timing out in the hallway.
