The incident unfolded when the customer's SIM card was allegedly transferred to a new device at a Best Buy store without the retailer requesting his identification.

According to a social media post from the victim, he became aware of the SIM swap when his Verizon service was cut off. He rushed to a nearby Verizon store, but employees were unable to block the transaction at Best Buy within the hour.

As a result of the fraudulent activity, the customer had two of his credit cards used during the three-hour period the thief had access to his account. Furthermore, Verizon is now demanding he pay $1,550 for the iPhone that the scammer purchased at Best Buy.

The victim, who works in the banking industry, is aware of SIM swap scams and has partially locked himself out of his Verizon account online to prevent the fraudulent iPhone purchase from being reflected on his bill.

Verizon is threatening to deduct the $1,550 iPhone cost from the customer's bank account by April 27 if he fails to pay. He has frozen his checking account and is exploring his options for resolving the situation.

This is not an isolated incident, as TechCurrent previously reported on another Verizon customer who was also targeted by a SIM swap scam in a similar manner.
