The invisible chip that writes the rules
Inside every serious USB-C line hides a grain-of-rice controller the industry calls an e-Marker. It doesn’t ferry electrons; it negotiates. When the charger advertises 20V @ 5A, the e-Marker counters with the cable’s own résumé: “I can take it, 5A rated, temperature sensor included.” Only then does the power controller open the flood-gate. No résumé, no deal. The fallback is a polite 3A ceiling—60W on paper, 45W after losses—enough to keep you wondering why the fan never spins up.
Chinese factories will ship the shell without the chip for 11¢ less per unit. Amazon aggregators relabel them“fast charging compatible”, a phrase that means nothing unless you peel the jacket and read the copper. Most buyers never do. Why your house is full of 15w impostors

Certified cables are now cheaper than frustration
USB-IF certification costs vendors about $3,000 per model—pocket change when amortised over a million units. Retail price delta to the consumer: roughly $1.50. Yet the top 20 best-selling cables on Amazon.de last week averaged €6.40, none certified. The maths is brutal: save a euro, lose 60W.
Look for the USB4 Gen 3 logo if you want a single sentence of reassurance. Anything else—“PD 100W” in Comic Sans, braided nylon, gold-plated tips—is set dressing. The logo guarantees 5A and 40Gbps because the licence is revoked if the cable misses the chip; Chinese factories risk losing Qualcomm royalties if they cheat.

Europe writes the obituary for dumb cords

By winter 2026 any cable sold inside the EU must carry an authenticated e-Marker and encrypt the handshake to prevent knock-off clones. Non-compliant stock gets turned back at Rotterdam. The UK, still shadowing CE rules to simplify cross-channel logistics, will quietly follow. The grey market shrinks overnight.
Until then, scan the comments section before you click. If twenty reviewers complain “only charges at 30W,” believe them; they already paid tuition so you don’t have to.
